The interdisciplinary research training group “Interconfessionality in the Early Modern Period” at the University of Hamburg announces vacancies for doctoral candidates.

4 PhD positions (65%) by April 1st, 2017 (maximum grant period three years)

The doctoral programme examines exchange processes between different denominations in the Early Modern Period (16th to 18th century) in Germany and other European and non-European areas (especially France, Italy, England, Greek Orthodox areas, South America and China). Of particular interest are projects on theological, political, literary and artistic phenomena, which cross denominational boundaries (interconfessional) or demonstrate underlying confessional similarities (transconfessional).

Applicants should be open to media-historical questions on the impact of different confessional concepts on various artefacts as well as variations of theological ideas in art and their reception. Our aim is not only to examine how literature, theatre, painting, sculpture and church music represented confessional dogma, but also how they transformed the latter.

Application requirements:

Completed university degree in one of the participating research fields (Literature, Protestant or Catholic theology, German studies, Romance studies, Byzantine or Modern Greek studies, Classical philology, Jewish studies, History, Art history, study of English language and literature, Latin American studies, Sinology, Musicology) and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team.

The application requires an exposé of the doctoral project (a max. of six pages), a curriculum vitae, copies of diploma and two letters of reference. The application is to be submitted by the date of January 15th 2017 in electronic form as a single PDF document as well as in paper form by post to:
