The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position, at the Assistant Professor level, beginning July 1, 2019, subject to final budgetary approval.

The area of specialization is French/Francophone Studies (literature, culture, film) with an open specialization.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (www.ryerson.ca/llc) is housed in the Faculty of Arts at Ryerson University in the city of Toronto in the territory of the Anishnaabeg, Haudenosaunee and Huron-Wendat peoples. The Department has undergone extraordinary growth and diversification in recent years, launching an original B.A. in Language and Intercultural Relations, as well as a new Major in Anthropology in the B.A. in Arts and Contemporary Studies. These innovative interdisciplinary programs aim at providing students with the opportunity to deepen their sense of self-awareness in order to achieve intercultural empathy and cultural competence, so that they can understand how others see the world differently and then serve as intercultural mediators in diverse walks of life. While our ambition is to build our own graduate program, faculty members are currently involved in several interdisciplinary graduate programs, including the M.A. in Immigration and Settlement Studies, the M.A./Ph.D. joint programs in Communication and Culture, and the Ph.D. in Policy Studies. In addition to a wide selection of courses taught in English, LLC offers courses in American Sign Language, Ancient Greek, Arabic, Chinese, French, and Spanish, with a plan to offer Indigenous language courses as soon as possible.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, research and service duties. Responsibilities will include teaching and supervising at the undergraduate and graduate levels; contributing to the undergraduate and graduate programs, including taking a lead role in French language, literature and culture curriculum development as appropriate; establishing and maintaining a strong, independent, externally-funded research agenda; and participating in the academic life and service activities of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, the Faculty of Arts and the University.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have completed (or expect to do so by July 2019) a PhD in French/Francophone Literature or similar field, and will demonstrate an ability to contribute to both our undergraduate and graduate programs, show evidence of high-quality teaching, cultivate a strong research profile and an emerging scholarly record, and manifest a clear capacity for collegial service. The department is interested in hiring an innovative and dynamic scholar who will develop and enhance appropriate curricular offerings and commit to help strengthen the French program. We are seeking candidates with a generalist profile and expertise in various areas of Francophone Studies who can demonstrate enthusiasm, innovation, and excellence in teaching, from basic language to advanced French and Francophone literature and culture courses. Area of specialization is open and could include colonial/postcolonial studies, Francophone African diaspora of the Caribbean, the Black Atlantic, and other related fields. Other subfields and topics are welcomed. French business or French for specific purposes is also a plus and advanced training in Second Language Acquisition is desirable, as is significant experience in teaching and in effectively addressing diversity in curricula and the classroom.
