Interdisciplinary Conference

'Revisiting the Gothic in Literature and the Visual Arts'

UCAM, 18 January 2019

This interdisciplinary conference will analyse and discuss the transformations undergone by the Gothic genre since the late 1970s up to today within the fields of fiction, the visual arts and other forms of popular culture. Special emphasis will fall on the appropriation and reformulation routines in the works under assessment plus the continuity (or discontinuity) of classic tropes. The organising committee welcomes proposals for fifteen‐minute papers dealing with any of the topics listed below. These will serve as examples of the survival and strength of the Gothic genre in contemporary society, while also inviting us to reflect on its shapeshifting possibilities and firm grip on the representation of present‐day fears, anxieties and instabilities.

-The redefinition of the Gothic in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
-The uncanny in contemporary literature, film and TV (e.g. The Shining, Salem’s Lot, Twin Peaks, Stranger Things…)
-The portrayal of late 20th and early 21st century society from a Gothic perspective.
-Gothic rewritings of classic works.
-The Exotic Gothic: alternative readings in the global south.
-The exploitation of Gothic elements in film and TV (e.g. Crimson Peak, Penny Dreadful, Wayward Pines…)
-Transgression (in relation to identity, interpersonal contact, the social sphere…).
-Power relations: men and women in contemporary gothic works (e.g. Atwood, King, Carter, Morton, Morrison…).
-Modern individual or collective identities in Gothic fiction and film.
